Hi, I'm David.
I live in Ventura, California, and I build things for the web — mostly in PHP, and in some form or another since typing program listings out of ANTIC and COMPUTE! Magazines in the 1980s.
About me
By day I'm a web developer building custom websites on my employer's web framework. On my own time I build Lantern, the framework which runs this site. It's a lightweight framework with a lean kernel, no DI container, and no unnecessary cleverness. I like to think of it as a Zen cottage, in contrast with a "cathedral" like Laravel or Symfony. It's the tool I like to use, which is a lower bar than "the tool everyone should use", and much more fun to build.
For its own sake
Cats, who have strong opinions about my office chair. Islay single malt whisky, slowly and not often. Films from the late seventies and eighties, back when the effects had to be physically built and the frightening thing worked better half-seen.
I make electronic music, which I released for several years as bugzero: spacey, downtempo, ambient. Before all of it there was over a decade of classical piano training, and somewhere in the middle there was beatmatching at parties for people who weren't paying attention.
The Saint-Exupéry line about perfection arriving when there's nothing left to take away has been running my decisions for a long time: in code, in music, in how I write. Not minimalism as a style; suspicion of anything that's there because it seemed like it ought to be.
